Customer Rating: Summary: Sooooo good, soooo depressing Comment: This book had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next! It was very well written, and the plot was fantastic, but I finished the book in a state of depression. The only glimmer of hope I hold onto is that the problems left hanging in this book will be resolved in the next. I LOVE this author, and this series. I will continue to be addicted to these books, but depressing conclusions suck.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty good story, but I was ready for it to end before it did. Several characters got annoying. Ending left me unhappy. Comment: The Celta's HeartMates Series:
Heart Mate
Heart Thief
Heart Duel
Heart Choice
Heart Quest
Heart Dance
Heart Fate (September 2008)
If you haven't read the prequels, start from the top of the series. Many characters return again and again in this series. You'll want to know them before reading "Heart Duel".
I love the uniqueness of this series. A whole different universe, a new race of humankind, several different species of super intelligent animals, etc... I also like the idea of the heart- bonds between the characters. However this particular story left me cold. The hero, Holm Holly, was a source of humor and endearment in the first two books. Now that he got to have his own story, all I can feel is sadness for him.
Holm Holly is the heir to his family title. He has spent his whole life working to live up to the standard his father has created. Unlike most nobles, it is believed that Holm does not have a chosen heartmate. He knows he must soon marry to begin producing the next generation of Holly heirs.
To Holm's surprise, he finds that he has a special attachment to a powerful healer named Lark. Before long, he realizes that she is his true heartmate. He knows that trouble awaits in the future. Lark's family is the Holly family's sworn enemies. Holm must work to win Lark without his family's knowledge.
I can't go too much farther without giving away the ending. But I will say that Holm's future was all but destroyed for the sake of this bond. What bothers me is that Lark did not seem worth the loss. She was cold and cruel to Holm throughout the book. When he would tell her his hopes for the future, her response was generally an insult. After growing so fond of Holm in the first two books, I was looking forward to seeing him bonded with an equally likable woman. I was disappointed.
The book did have some great points. Holm's and Lark's Fams were twin kittens. They were a lot of fun. Unfortunately, most of the people characters in the book spent the story very unhappy, angry, spiteful, and hypocritically selfish. Holm's brother, Tinne, was the breath of fresh air who gave more than he took. I do want to read his story. I also want to read about their cousin, Straif. But Holm's book was a let- down.
If you want to read the series, here are the links to the first two books:
Heart Mate (Celta's HeartMates, Book 1) (Berkley Sensation)
Heart Thief (Celta's HeartMates, Book 2) (Berkley Sensation Showcase)
(Heart Duel is book 3)
If you enjoy futuristic romance, try the Psy/ Changeling series:
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1)
Visions of Heat (Psy-Changelings, Book 2) (My fav of the series.)
Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changelings, Book 3)
Mine to Possess (Psy-Changelings, Book 4)
Also, The Immortals series:
The Calling (Immortals, Book 1)
The Darkening (Immortals, Book 2) (Not great, but the rest of the series is.)
The Awakening (Immortals, Book 3)
The Gathering (Immortals, Book 4)
Customer Rating: Summary: Just o.k. Comment: While I found some parts of the book to be quite enjoyable, there were whole sections that I found to be extremely tedious and the ending left me disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: The best of the series...so far... Comment: I have read each book in this series and I have to say this one was the best of them all. All of them were wonderful, but this one stayed with me even after I read it. I was emotional, passionate and more powerful on different emotional levels. You can feel the frustration with each character and the longing as well. It is an awesome series, but this one really was the best book this far, in my opinion. But I hope there are more to come!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great story by a great author Comment: I purchased this book after reading Ms. Owens first book "Heart Mate" and second book "Heart Thief". This book mixes sci-fi/fantasy and romance together, which makes it a great combo for me, as I enjoy reading both genres. I think this is a beautifully written story rich in detail of the world Ms. Owens has created. I enjoyed reading the first and second books and I enjoyed this one just as much. I can barely wait for new stories by Ms. Owens to come out.

Healer Lark Collinson hates the street duelling that is a way of life among the noble families on Celta -- it was just such a skirmish that killerd her Healer husband and left her a grieving widow. The last thing she wants is to lov a man to whom fighting is a way of life -- a man like the brashly confident Holm Holly. All it takes is one brief touch for Holm to know that Lark is his HeartMate, though wooing her will be his greatest challenge. For not only does she despise everything he represents, but the long-standing feud between theri families has exploded into even greater violence. Their destiny has been revealed...but at what cost to their own hearts?
