Summary: Not what I was expecting at all!
Comment: I must say I was very dissapointed when I received this. It says inside that it was originally printed in 1978 under the name "The Great Superman Book." Thus, the presentation leaves much to be desired. It's pretty much the same way it was originally printed, in newsprint with old fashioned lettering. While the encyclopedia is very thick and full with information, you would think that a Superman Encyclopedia being printed in 2007 would include EVERYTHING from his first appearance in Action Comics #1 in 1938 to the present. Well, no, it's not updated at all, you won't find any reference to events that took place after 1978... and a lot has happened in those 30 years... among them several continuity altering Crisis, a re-inventing by John Byrne, and can any Superman fan own any kind of encyclopedia that does not at least state that Superman is currently MARRIED to Lois Lane!?

Another draw back is that there are very little images and comic panels featured, and in a medium that is so visual as comics, this detracts greatly from the book's appeal. For the same reason, lack of color is also a downer.

In all, if you are a Golden Age and Silver Age Superman fan, and own many older Superman comics or Archives compilations (and odds are you are probably over 40 years old), this book would probably will be of interest to you. If you are a more modern or younger comic fan and aren't interested in older books, skip this item and move along.
